My name is Wendy. I have been looking after children since 2008, and for most of those years the families who hired me were not from Vietnam. They came for a holiday, for a work posting, or for a move that turned into something longer. Caring for a child in a hotel room in a country they have never seen before is its own kind of work, and it is the work I know best.

Why families come back?

Something that surprises people: the hard part is rarely the child. It is the gap between how a family does things at home and what happens in an unfamiliar room. Every household has its own way — how food is served, how bedtime runs, how much noise counts as normal. I do not assume any of it. I ask, I write it down, and I follow it. Children from two years old up to ten have all passed through my care, and each age wants something different from me.

What the hours include

Getting to sleep. An unfamiliar bed makes a child uneasy. I keep to whatever sequence you already use at home, in the same order, so the room stops feeling strange.

Time spent playing. I arrive with things in my bag — paper, cards, small books — so we are never stuck in an empty room. What we do depends on the child in front of me, not on a plan.

Bath and meals. I heat whatever you have left, sit with them while they eat, and run the bath the way you would.

If you are here on holiday

Four days in a city is not long, and losing an evening to an exhausted child is a real loss. Book me for the dinner, the museum, the trip out to the tunnels — whatever it was you came here for. I will be at the room before you need to leave.

When one sitter is not enough

Birthdays, family gatherings, two children who each need their own pair of hands. I work with sitters I have known for years and can bring one along when the situation calls for it. You will know in advance who is coming.

The letters on this page were written by parents at the end of their stay, without my asking. Some were families I saw once. Some booked me again the following year. I keep only the ones they gave me permission to show.
